Slovenia in October: Weather, Autumn Colours & Things to Do
What October actually looks like in Slovenia: ten years of weather figures for five towns, where the autumn colour is best, what closes for the season, and the things this month does better than summer.

October is the month Slovenia stops being busy and starts being beautiful. The coaches thin out at Bled, the lakeside paths empty, and the beech forests that cover something like six tenths of the country turn colour all at once.
It is also the month the weather stops being dependable. So this guide starts with numbers rather than adjectives.
October weather in Slovenia: the actual figures
Slovenia is small but climatically divided three ways — alpine in the north-west, Mediterranean on the coast, continental in the east — and in October the three diverge sharply. The coast is still in short sleeves while the Alps are getting their first snow.
Town | Average day | Average night | Rain in the month | Wet days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Ljubljana | 16.9 °C | 7.2 °C | 114 mm | about 10 |
Bled | 15.9 °C | 7.8 °C | 144 mm | about 11 |
Piran | 19.2 °C | 13.0 °C | 128 mm | about 10 |
Bovec | 16.2 °C | 8.7 °C | 294 mm | about 13 |
Maribor | 17.1 °C | 8.9 °C | 84 mm | about 9 |
Averages of every day in October across the ten years 2016–2025, from the ERA5 reanalysis via the Open-Meteo archive. A wet day is one with at least 1 mm of rain.
Three things fall out of that table. The coast is the warm option — Piran’s nights in October are warmer than Ljubljana’s days are cold. The Soča valley is extraordinarily wet — Bovec gets more than twice Ljubljana’s rain, which is why the river is the colour it is and why you should pack for it. And the east is the dry side: Maribor and the wine country get the fewest wet days in the country.
Where the autumn colour is, and when
Colour arrives from the top down. Above about 1,500 metres the larch — the one conifer that turns — goes gold in the first half of the month. The beech in the valleys follows in the second half, and the vineyards and the Karst hold on into November.

The lakes
Bled in late October is a different lake: the shoreline path runs through colour the whole way round, and the Mala Osojnica viewpoint gives you the island surrounded by it. Bohinj is better still and quieter, with the advantage that the Vogel cable car puts you above the colour looking down on it.

The valleys
The Soča valley is the most dramatic — turquoise water running between gold slopes — and the Kozjak waterfall walk out of Kobarid is at its best with leaves on the ground. Logarska Dolina in the north is a glacial trough closed off by mountains, and in late October the whole floor of it turns.

The towns
Ljubljana does autumn well: Tivoli Park runs straight from the city into woodland, and the river embankments are lined with plane trees.

What October does better than summer
1. The caves do not care what month it is
Postojna Cave and the Škocjan Caves sit at around 10 °C all year, so an October visit is identical to a July one except for the queue. A wet day is the ideal cave day, and this is the month to get these two without booking weeks ahead.

2. The grape harvest
The trgatev runs through late September and October across all three wine regions — Goriška Brda and the Vipava valley in the west, the Karst, and the hills above Ptuj and Maribor in the east. Cellars are open, and this is the one time of year the whole countryside smells of it.

Worth knowing for the diary: martinovanje, the feast when the year’s must officially becomes wine, is 11 November — the month after this one. October is the harvest; November is the party.
3. Chestnuts and the autumn table
Roast chestnuts appear on street corners from October, and the season’s cooking leans into pumpkin, pumpkin-seed oil — the thick dark one from the east that Slovenes put on everything including ice cream — game, and štruklji. It is the best eating month of the year and the one where the heavy end of Slovenian cooking makes sense.
4. Thermal spas, finally in season
Slovenia has an unusual number of thermal spas and they are wasted in August. Podčetrtek, Moravske Toplice, Rogaška Slatina and Laško are all outdoor-pool-in-cold-air places, which is exactly what you want in October — and all four are in the drier east.
5. Lake Cerknica comes back
Cerknica has an intermittent lake: it drains through the karst underneath and disappears for part of the year, then refills with the autumn rain. October is usually when it returns, which makes it one of the few attractions in Europe that is better in bad weather.

6. Everything is quieter and cheaper
Bled in late October has the same island and a fraction of the people. Accommodation on the coast drops sharply after the first week. The one exception is the last week of the month, when Slovenian schools have a holiday and the spas and family hotels fill up.
What is closing, and what to check
October is a transition month, and a few things genuinely stop:
High mountain roads. The Vršič Pass is the one that matters for travellers — it closes with snow, and an early fall can shut it at any point in the month. Check before building a day around it.
Mountain huts. Most huts in the Julian Alps and the Kamnik Alps close around the end of September or during October. A high walk in October is a day walk, not an overnight one, unless you have checked that particular hut.
Seasonal boats and lifts. Some lake boats and smaller chairlifts run a reduced timetable or stop. The bigger cable cars, including Vogel, generally keep going.
Coastal restaurants. Piran and Portorož thin out after the first half of the month; the good places stay open, but check rather than turn up.
Daylight. Sunset moves from about 18:45 at the start of the month to about 16:45 at the end, because the clocks go back on the last Sunday in October. That is the single biggest practical change to your day.
What to pack for Slovenia in October
A waterproof jacket. Not a shower-resistant one. See the Bovec column of that table.
Layers. A ten-degree swing between night and afternoon is normal, and bigger in the mountains.
Shoes with grip. Wet leaves on the Vintgar boardwalk and on the Osojnica climb are genuinely slippery.
A swimsuit anyway. For the spas, and for the sea in the first week if you are brave.
A head torch if you walk, because the afternoon ends sooner than you think after the clocks change.
A good October week
If we were planning it: two nights in Ljubljana for the city and a cave day, three nights at Bled or Bohinj for the colour, with the Vintgar gorge on the first clear morning, and two nights in the east at a spa — which gives you the driest part of the country at the end of the trip, when the weather is least reliable.
Avoid committing the high mountains to a fixed day. Keep them for whichever morning the forecast gives you, and have the caves, the spas and the towns as the wet-day answer. Our planner does exactly that if you tell it your dates — it reads the forecast for the days you will actually be here, and says plainly when the day you had in mind for a summit is going to be a washout. If you want things booked before you arrive, the tours and tickets are there too.
Questions people ask
Is October a good time to visit Slovenia?
It is one of the best months, with two caveats. The colour in the forests is exceptional, the lakes and towns are quiet, and prices drop. But the days are short, it rains more than in summer, and the high mountain roads and huts start closing. Plan for the valleys and the towns, and treat a clear day in the mountains as a bonus.
How cold is Slovenia in October?
Mild in the day and cold at night. Averaged over the last ten Octobers, Ljubljana runs about 17°C by day and 7°C at night, Bled about 16°C and 8°C, and the coast at Piran about 19°C and 13°C. Early October often feels like late summer; the last week can feel like winter.
Does it rain a lot in Slovenia in October?
More than in summer, and much more in the west. Ljubljana averages about 114 mm across the month with around ten wet days; Bovec, in the Soča valley, averages nearly 300 mm. The rain tends to arrive in systems lasting a day or two rather than as afternoon showers, so a week in October usually contains several genuinely good days.
When is the best time to see autumn colours in Slovenia?
The second half of October for the valleys and lakes, which is when the beech and larch turn around Bled, Bohinj and the Soča. Higher up it happens earlier — the larch above 1,500 m is usually gold in the first half of the month. In the vineyards of the east and the Karst, colour often holds into early November.
Is the Vršič Pass open in October?
Usually, but not reliably. It is a high alpine road that closes with snow, and an early fall can shut it for a day or for the season. Check the road status before you plan a day around it, and have the long way round in mind.
Can you still swim in Slovenia in October?
In the sea at Piran, some people do early in the month — the Adriatic holds its summer warmth into October. The alpine lakes are cold. The better October answer is a thermal spa: Slovenia has a lot of them, and they are at their best when the air is cold.
