Why visit
The Vipava valley runs west from Ajdovščina to the Italian border, sheltered to the north by the Trnovo plateau. It is warm, and it grows two white grapes found almost nowhere else: zelen and pinela. The valley is also where the burja — a violent north-east downslope wind — hits hardest in Slovenia, which shapes the architecture, the stone roofs and the vineyards. It has become the country’s most interesting small-producer wine region, and it is barely 45 minutes from Ljubljana.
