A First World War front town that became one of Slovenia’s two serious food destinations.
Kobarid was Caporetto — the site of the 1917 breakthrough that Hemingway wrote into A Farewell to Arms, and the Kobarid Museum covering it is one of the better war museums in Europe. The town is also, improbably for its size, a gastronomic centre: Hiša Franko sits just outside it. The Kozjak waterfall and the Soča gorges are both walkable, and the valley here is warmer and gentler than Bovec upstream.
