A museum of the Isonzo front and the 1917 breakthrough at Caporetto, widely rated one of Europe’s best war museums.
It gives the entire valley a second dimension — after an hour here the terrain outside reads differently.
The Isonzo front ran through this valley from 1915 to 1917, and the twelfth battle — the German-Austrian breakthrough at Caporetto — broke the Italian line here. The museum treats it without nationalism, through the experience of soldiers on both sides, and it won the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 1993. It pairs with the Italian charnel house above the town and the Walk of Peace, an outdoor route to preserved trenches and positions.
