Great Soča Gorge

Velika korita Soče

A 750 m stretch where the Soča has cut a narrow trench up to 15 m deep — and where its colour is most extreme.

Why visit

The single most distinctive natural thing in Slovenia. No other river in the Alps looks like this.

About

This is the gorge that explains the Soča’s reputation. The river runs through a slot up to 15 m deep and only a few metres wide, and the water — which carries fine limestone rather than sediment — reads as a saturated emerald that photographs badly and looks implausible in person. There is a footbridge over the narrowest section, and the Soča Trail follows the bank. Swimming is possible in the wider pools below, and the water is very cold.

Good to know

Unfenced drops into a deep, fast, very cold channel. Do not jump into the narrow gorge; keep small children close. Levels rise quickly after rain and in snowmelt.
