Slovenia’s largest natural lake — 4.2 km long, inside Triglav National Park, and genuinely swimmable.
It is what Bled would be without the crowds — four times the water and a fraction of the people.
Bohinj is a glacial lake held behind a moraine, 4.2 km long and up to 45 m deep, entirely within Triglav National Park. Because of that protection there is no shoreline development to speak of; the water is clean and swimming from the shore is normal and free. A flat path runs the full circuit in about two and a half hours. Kayaks, SUPs and rowing boats are hired at Ribčev Laz and Ukanc. The water is cold well into June.
Open water with no lifeguards. The lake is cold and deep close to shore at the western end.
The Ribčev Laz shore and the road-side southern path are largely flat. The northern shore path is a narrow woodland trail with roots and rock and is not suitable for wheels.
