Slovenia’s second city, with the world’s oldest producing vine and a ski hill inside the city limits.
Maribor sits on the Drava under Pohorje, and it is a working city rather than a resort — a university, an industrial history, and a large student population. The Old Vine on Vojanička Street is documented as over 400 years old and is generally recognised as the oldest vine in the world still producing fruit. Pohorje rises straight out of the suburbs with a gondola from Zgornje Radvanje, making Maribor unusual in having genuine skiing and mountain biking within city transport. It is the natural base for Ptuj and the eastern wine roads.
