A 24 km cave system open to visitors since 1819, toured partly by underground electric railway.
The most reliable wet-weather plan in the country, and genuinely impressive at any age.
Postojna is the most visited cave in Slovenia and the most comfortable to see: an electric train — running since 1872 — carries you into the system, after which the tour walks a broad, lit path through decorated chambers including the Concert Hall. It is the type locality of the olm, the blind cave salamander, which is displayed in the adjacent vivarium. The cave holds a constant 10°C with high humidity, so a jacket and proper shoes are needed regardless of the weather outside. Tours run to fixed times; booking ahead is sensible in season.
The train removes most of the distance and the walking path is broad and paved, but there are gradients and some steps. The operator does publish accessibility arrangements — contact them directly to confirm what is possible for a specific need rather than relying on this record.
