Lipica Stud Farm

Kobilarna Lipica

The 1580 stud that gave the Lipizzaner its name, still breeding the horses on the original Karst pastures.

Why visit

A 440-year continuous breeding line, on the ground it was bred for — not a re-creation.

About

Lipica was founded by Archduke Charles II in 1580 to supply horses to the Habsburg court, and the breed carries the place name. The estate is still a working stud on open Karst pasture, and visits include the stables, the breeding herd, a carriage museum and, on published days, a classical riding presentation. The Lipizzaner breeding tradition was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022, in a joint nomination with seven other countries. Schedules for presentations vary by season, so check before travelling.
