Sava Valley Cycle Path

A flat former railway line from Kranjska Gora to Italy and on towards Austria — the best family cycling in Slovenia.

Why visit

A genuinely flat, car-free alpine cycle route — rare, and the easiest way to cross into Italy for lunch.

About

The old Bohinj railway alignment west of Kranjska Gora has been converted into a gravel and asphalt cycle path running to Rateče, across the Italian border to Tarvisio, and onward as part of the Alpe-Adria route. It is almost entirely flat or gently downhill westbound, traffic-free, and passes Zelenci and Planica. Bike hire in Kranjska Gora is plentiful, including trailers and child seats, and the return leg can be done by shuttle in season.
