fortress
Trdnjava Kluže
An Austro-Hungarian fort astride a gorge on the Predel road, guarding the entrance to the upper Soča.
Kluže sits where the Koritnica cuts a narrow gorge, a natural choke point fortified since the fifteenth century and rebuilt in its present form in the 1880s. Its purpose was to block the route from Austria into the Soča valley, and it saw action on the Isonzo front. It is open to visitors in season, with exhibitions and events, and the older Fort Hermann ruins are a walk above it. The gorge below the walls is startling.
A historic fortification with stairs, cobbles and uneven floors.
