Working salt pans on the Croatian border where salt is still made by hand — and a major bird reserve.

Why visit

A working pre-industrial saltworks that is also a birdwatching site — there is nothing else like it in the country.

About

Salt has been produced at Sečovlje since the medieval period using the same method: seawater evaporated in shallow basins over a biological crust called petola, and harvested by hand. Part of the park is still in production, and part is a Ramsar wetland that is one of the most important bird sites in the region, with well over 200 species recorded. The Lera section has a museum and a flat network of paths and embankments. There is no shade, so it is hard going at midday in summer.
