square
Tartinijev trg
Piran’s oval main square — a filled-in Venetian harbour, named after the violinist born on it.
The square was the inner harbour of Venetian Piran until it was filled in 1894, which is why it is an oval rather than a rectangle and why the buildings around it face the wrong way for a town square. Giuseppe Tartini, the violinist and composer, was born in the house on its eastern side in 1692, and his statue stands in the middle. The Venetian House on the corner, the town hall and the courthouse frame it. It is the natural centre of everything in Piran and completely car-free.
The square itself is flat and paved. The lanes leading off it are steep and stepped, and there is no vehicle access into the old town.
