Piran / Pirano
A Venetian town on a headland, car-free inside the walls, with the best-preserved historic core on the Slovenian coast.
Piran was Venetian for five centuries and still reads that way — Tartini Square is an oval filled-in harbour, the campanile is a copy of St Mark’s, and the lanes behind it are too narrow for cars. The town is genuinely car-free within the walls; visitors park at Fornace and take the shuttle. It is small enough to exhaust in a day but much better at dusk, after the day-trippers leave. The walls above the town give the view that makes the trip, for a very small entry fee.
