karst valley
Slovenia’s oldest landscape park — a collapsed cave valley with a natural bridge at each end.
Rakov Škocjan is a two-and-a-half kilometre karst valley formed when a cave roof collapsed, leaving a natural arch at each end: the Small Natural Bridge where the Rak enters, and the Great Natural Bridge where it disappears underground. Protected since 1949, it is the oldest landscape park in the country. A flat circular walk of about an hour links both bridges through beech woodland. It is quiet, free, and rarely on itineraries — which is most of its appeal.
Mostly flat forest track. Viewing the bridges themselves involves short rough descents.
