Pourquoi y aller
Koroška is the part of Slovenia that foreign visitors reach last, hemmed in between the Pohorje, the Austrian border and the Karavanke, and Slovenj Gradec is its town. The centre is one long square of low painted houses, and the town was voted the most beautiful in Slovenia in 2023. The Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts here is a serious collection rather than a local one, and in 1989 the United Nations named the town a Peace Messenger City, which is still how it presents itself. Above it stands Uršlja gora, 1,699 m, with a church on the summit and marked paths up from the valley on either side. The Mislinja and Meža valleys, Dravograd on the Drava and the old lead mine at Mežica are all within half an hour.
