A Roman town under the largest castle in Slovenia, seat of the counts who put the three stars on the national coat of arms.
Celje was Roman Celeia, and the counts of Celje were the most powerful noble house in medieval Slovenian lands — their three gold stars are on the country’s coat of arms and flag today. The Old Castle above the town is the largest fortification in Slovenia and genuinely worth the climb; the Princely Palace in the centre has Roman Celeia excavated beneath it. Celje is a third of the way from Ljubljana to Maribor on the motorway, which makes it an easy stop rather than a destination.
