The largest fortification in Slovenia, seat of the counts whose three stars are on the national flag.
About
The Old Castle spreads along a ridge above Celje and is the largest fortified complex in the country. It was the seat of the counts of Celje, the most powerful noble family in the Slovenian lands, who died out in 1456 — their three gold stars became part of the coat of arms of Slovenia. Frederick’s Tower can be climbed for a long view over the Savinja valley. The site is extensive and largely open, with events and re-enactments through the summer.
