Bela krajina — the white march, named for its birches — is flat, warm and culturally distinct, with a strong surviving folk music and costume tradition and an Orthodox minority with roots in sixteenth-century Uskok settlement. The Kolpa, which forms the Croatian border, is the warmest river in Slovenia and genuinely swimmable through the summer, with campsites along it. Metlika and Črnomelj are the two towns. It is the least Alpine part of Slovenia and feels like a different country.
