The gateway to Slovenia’s largest forest — virgin stands, brown bears, and Europe’s deepest closed karst depression.
The KoČevje forest is the most extensive and least populated woodland in Slovenia, with several strictly protected primeval remnants — KoČevski Rog among them — that have never been logged. It holds the country’s core brown bear population, and guided bear-watching from hides is available through licensed operators. This is also historically loaded ground: it was German-speaking Gottschee until 1941, and later the site of post-war mass killings. Visitors should expect genuine wilderness and thin infrastructure.
