Pourquoi y aller
Krško is a working town on the Sava and makes no pretence otherwise — the country’s only nuclear power station is here. What brings a visitor is five kilometres upstream at Brestanica, where Rajhenburg Castle stands on a bluff above the river: one of the oldest castles in Slovenia, a Trappist monastery from 1881 whose monks made chocolate and a liqueur that is still sold, then a camp from which thousands of Slovenes were deported in 1941, and now a museum that tells all three. The Sremič hills directly above the town are a small wine district, and ten kilometres east Kostanjevica na Krki — the smallest town in Slovenia, on an island in the river — is worth the detour on its own.
