Why visit
Velika Planina is one of the largest high-altitude pastures in Europe still in seasonal use. The herdsmen’s huts — low, shingled, oval-roofed — are a genuine vernacular form, not a reconstruction, and cattle are still brought up in summer. The plateau is gently rolling rather than steep, which makes it one of the few genuinely easy high-alpine walks in the country and a strong option with children. The cable car runs from Kamniška Bistrica; check operating times, as they vary by season and weather.
