Why visit
Novo mesto sits inside a tight meander of the Krka, which gives the old town its shape. The area was a major Hallstatt-period centre and the local museum holds one of the richest Iron Age collections in the region, including situlae. Around it, Dolenjska grows cviček — a light, low-alcohol blended red found only here. The Krka valley upstream, with Žužemberk castle and the river’s travertine steps, is the better reason to linger.
