Brown Bear Watching
Guided observation of wild brown bears from hides in the Kočevje forest, with licensed operators.
About
Slovenia holds a substantial brown bear population, concentrated in the Kočevje and Notranjska forests, and licensed guides run evening sessions from purpose-built observation hides. Sightings are genuinely wild and therefore not guaranteed; sessions involve a quiet walk in, a long still wait, and strict rules on noise and light. This is one of the more distinctive things available in Slovenia and it must be booked through an authorised operator — approaching bears independently is both dangerous and unlawful in protected areas.
Good to know
Wild large carnivores. Only go with a licensed guide, follow their instructions exactly, and never attempt to find or approach bears independently.
Book through a licensed operator. We do not provide technical instructions for this activity.
