New Olive Oil in Slovenian Istria: Where to Taste It This November
New Olive Oil in Slovenian Istria: Where to Taste It This November
·4 min read
The olive harvest in Slovenian Istria runs from late October into November, and the week it ends is the week the new oil is worth driving for. Fresh oil is a different food from the bottle on your shelf: green, cloudy, peppery, and best within months.
This is a small olive region — a strip of coast and hills around Koper, Izola and Piran — and that is exactly why it is good. You can cross it in twenty minutes and taste at three farms in an afternoon.
What ZOP means, and why you should care
Slovenian Istria's olive oil carries a protected designation of origin: ZOP. It means the olives were grown and pressed in the region, to rules, and it is the label to look for on a bottle if you want the real thing rather than a blend.
Within that, the region runs its own annual competition, Zlata oljčna vejica — the Golden Olive Branch — now more than thirty years old. In 2026 it drew a record 163 samples, which tells you how seriously the small growers take it.
The 2026 champion was Janko Bočaj of Stara Kortina in Maurino. The vice-champion titles went to Ekološka družinska kmetija Olea d'Istria and to Oljčno olje Morgan. There was also a separate public tasting to choose the most-liked ZOP oil of the year, judged on preference rather than technical score.
Translation for a traveller: those three names are a very good shortlist.
Three ways to taste it
Oljarna Lisjak, Koper / Šalara
One of the best-known mills in the country, and the one that makes an outing of it. Their Vintage Gourmet Tour takes you out to the groves in classic cars, then back to a modern mill for a guided tasting. If you are travelling with someone who needs to be persuaded that an olive farm is a good idea, this is how you persuade them.
Oljčno olje Morgan, Grintovec
Organic production, and repeatedly awarded at international competitions. A smaller, quieter visit than Lisjak and closer to the farm level of the region — the kind of place where the person pouring the oil is the person who picked the olives.
Ekološka družinska kmetija Olea d'Istria
A family organic farm, and one of the two vice-champions of 2026. Book ahead; farms this size do not have a reception desk.
The season has its own festival now
The Istrian culinary days have added a dedicated stretch for young olive oil — Dnevi mladega oljčnega olja — alongside the existing white fish days. It is a change worth knowing about if you plan the coast in November: the region has decided that new oil is a reason to visit in its own right, not a footnote to summer.
How to taste it properly
Ask for the harvest date, not the best-before date. Fresh oil is the point.
Warm the glass in your hand. Cold oil hides its aroma.
Expect bitterness and pepper in the throat. In fresh Istrian oil that is a good sign, not a fault — it means polyphenols.
Buy small. A bottle you finish in three months beats a five-litre tin you open next autumn.
Keep it dark and cool. Light and heat are what kill it.
Where to base yourself
Izola for the fishing port and the easiest access to the mills at Šalara and Koper. Piran for the prettiest town and the least parking. Koper for the train and bus links, if you are doing this without a car.
In November the coast is empty, most konobas are still open, and the sea is warm enough to look at and cold enough to avoid. That is the deal.
Or let it find the farms for you
If you would rather say "olive farm near Izola, tasting, open on a Saturday" than cross-reference mills against a map, ask LetsVisit. It answers with real places drawn from 43 destinations and 6,216 spots across Slovenia, on a map, with the bookable ones ready to book. No sponsored slots.
FAQ
When is olive harvest in Slovenian Istria?
From late October into November. New oil appears during and just after the harvest, and it is at its best within the first few months.
What does ZOP mean on a Slovenian olive oil bottle?
Protected designation of origin. It certifies that the olives were grown and pressed in Slovenian Istria under the region's production rules.
Which olive oil won in Slovenian Istria in 2026?
The Golden Olive Branch champion was Janko Bočaj of Stara Kortina in Maurino, with Olea d'Istria and Oljčno olje Morgan as vice-champions.
Can I visit an olive mill without booking?
Some, but not reliably in harvest. The mills are working flat out in November. Call first, especially for small family farms.
Is November a good time to visit the Slovenian coast?
Yes, if you want it quiet. Most konobas stay open, prices drop, and the olive harvest gives you a reason to be there that has nothing to do with swimming.
