Coffee in Ljubljana: 11 Places Worth Sitting Down For
5 min read
Ljubljana has quietly turned into a coffee city. Not a city with good coffee shops — a city where people argue about water, beans and whether a takeaway cup should exist at all.
What follows is eleven places where you sit down and stay a while. Every one of them is real and open, and most roast, or work closely with a roaster you can visit. I have said what each is actually good at rather than ranking them, because the right café depends on whether you want to read a book or open a laptop.
One thing that will surprise you: prices are kind. An espresso in the centre costs less than a coffee on a motorway in Italy.
The eleven, and what each is for
1. STOW
The Ljubljana roastery flagship, and the safest recommendation in the city. Freshly roasted coffee, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and beans to buy on the way out. If you have one coffee stop and no time to think, go here.
2. Stow Cukrarna
The same coffee in a very different room. Cukrarna is the converted sugar factory by the river, now a gallery and events venue, and this café runs with concerts and cultural evenings as well as cups. Coffee and craft beer, in a building worth walking through even if you drink nothing.
3. Café Čokl
The one with a conscience. Čokl works closely with Buna roastery and does not offer takeaway coffee at all — you drink from a proper cup, at a table, or not at all. Espresso, cappuccino, iced coffee, and decaf. Calm by design, so do not come here in a rush.
4. Crno Zrno
The character of the city's coffee scene. Crno Zrno was ranked among Europe's best coffee shops in 2020 and has spent the years since collaborating on odd, good ideas — a cold brew Negroni among them. If Alex, the chef-barista and owner, is behind the bar, ask for the panela lemonade.
5. Kavarna Specialka by Goat Story
The remote-worker's café. Goat Story's own roastery supplies it, the room is large and welcoming, batch brew is always on, and you get a choice of beans for espresso — which is more than most places will do for you. Dogs welcome.
6. Kavarna Natura
One for the weather. Natura's terrace has a fireplace in winter and deep shade in summer, so it works all year. Espresso, white coffee, filter brews — and if a blend wins you over, they will grind beans for you to take home.
7. Mala Pražarna
Tiny, warm, cat-themed, and half roastery. Mala Pražarna runs free coffee tastings every Monday at noon, which is the best free hour in Ljubljana if you are curious about what you are drinking. If you take your coffee black, order a hand brew; there are usually six coffees to choose from.
8. Pražarna
They roast on site, which is the whole reason to come. Ask for Eldin — he is essentially always behind the bar and will fit a coffee to your taste rather than the other way round. There is one odd, useful extra: specialty capsules compatible with Nespresso machines, so you can take the trip home with you.
9. R&B Café Roasters
Half roastery, half all-day brunch. Three grinders usually carry a daily-driver Brazil, a brighter Colombia or Ethiopia, and a specialty decaf. Come hungry, stay for the second cup.
10. Moderna
The café inside the Museum of Modern Art. Macchiato, double espresso, filter, even coffee cocktails — and a good way to break up a gallery afternoon without leaving the building.
11. Lana's Corner
The evening option. Specialty coffee, wine, desserts and coffee cocktails in one room, which makes it the sensible bridge between an afternoon and a night out. Order a double espresso and the tiramisu.
How to drink your way through it
Group them by area, not by ranking. STOW, Čokl and the old-town cluster sit within a short walk of each other and the river; Cukrarna and the museum cafés fit a rainy afternoon; Specialka and R&B suit a working morning.
Go in the morning. Ljubljana's cafés fill up around eleven. Before nine you get a seat, a barista with time to talk, and the city at its quietest.
Ask what is fresh. Every roaster on this list will tell you roast dates if you ask. That is the difference between a good café and a great one.
Watch for Monday. The weekly tasting at Mala Pražarna is Monday at noon, which is also when several smaller cafés take their day off.
Or ask for what you actually want
If you would rather skip the list and say it plainly — "quiet café with good filter coffee, open before nine, near the river" — ask LetsVisit. It answers in your own words with real places drawn from 43 destinations and 6,216 spots across Slovenia, on a map, with the bookable ones ready to book. No sponsored placements.
