Best-Rated Burgers in Ljubljana: 10 Places Worth Your Lunch
6 min read
Ljubljana has a lot of burgers and not much patience for bad ones. The city's burger scene grew up fast. What was a shipping container in a car park in 2012 is now a category with awards, queues and a proper rivalry at the top.
So this is a rated list, not a hype list. Every place below has a public rating behind it or a place on a national food selection, and I have said plainly where the evidence is thinner. Restaurants close, ratings move and menus change, so check the current listing before you cross town.
How this list was built
Four things counted: a place in the Gault&Millau Slovenia 2026 selection, coverage from local media and the city tourist board, public rating and review volume, and whether the burger is the reason to go. Places where the burger is an afterthought on a long menu did not make it.
One note on numbers. A 4.7 from 538 reviews and a 4.5 from 2,642 are not the same claim. I have given both where I found them, so you can weigh them yourself.
1. Pop's Place: the top-rated burger in the city
Pop's Place sits on the Ljubljanica embankment by the Triple Bridge, and it is number one for burgers on Tripadvisor (4.5 from 2,642 reviews) and on Restaurant Guru. It is also in the Gault&Millau Slovenia 2026 selection.
The beef is the argument. The restaurant says it is Slovenian, grass-fed, dry-aged for up to 45 days and ground on site, and the city tourist board puts the patties at 180 g. Treat those as the restaurant's and the tourist board's numbers rather than independently verified ones. The brioche is baked in-house. Gault&Millau points to two burgers: the Pop's Original and The Boss. It opened in 2015.
Address: Cankarjevo nabrežje 3. Book or go early in summer, because the embankment tables go first.
2. Hood Burger: the homegrown one worth the queue
Hood Burger is the local success story. Til Pleterski and Klemen Ptičak started with a stand outside Sax Pub in 2012 and moved into a shipping container in the Interspar Vič car park that November. Today there are branches in the centre, in Vič and at BTC, and the Center branch is in the Gault&Millau Slovenia 2026 selection.
What you get: house-made potato buns brushed with butter, Slovenian pasture-raised beef, and fries cut from Slovenian potatoes soaked for 24 hours to pull out the starch. Order Le Brie, the one both Gault&Millau and the tourist board single out. The Center branch on Nazorjeva, two minutes from Prešeren Square, is open 11:00 to midnight daily, which makes it the best late arrival in town.
3. Zbornica: the higher score, the smaller sample
Zbornica actually beats Pop's Place on Tripadvisor score, 4.7 to 4.5, but on 538 reviews rather than 2,642. It is third in Tripadvisor's burger ranking and second on Restaurant Guru.
The setting is the reason people fall for it. It sits in a corner of Foersterjev vrt, a garden behind the Faculty of Arts, which means you eat in green quiet two minutes from the centre. Open 10:00 to 22:00, closed Sunday. Fries were listed at one euro, which may well be out of date, so ask.
4. Smash: the dedicated smash burger
Smash opened on Slovenska cesta in June 2024, from the team behind the former Birdie restaurant, after testing smash burgers at the Odprta kuhna food market from 2022. It is the city's dedicated smash burger place: thin patties, crisp edges, no pretending otherwise.
The bar is half the appeal, with more than 50 cocktails and a champagne list. If you want a burger and a proper drink rather than a burger and a beer, this is the one.
5. Dežela Okusov: the gluten-free option that is not a compromise
In Trnovo, on Eipprova, Dežela Okusov runs a 100% gluten-free kitchen, the city's only one according to In Your Pocket. The Deželni burger comes on a house-made bun with Slovenian meat, and there are flat burgers including an Angus and a salmon version. That listing is undated, so confirm what is on when you arrive.
If someone in your group needs gluten-free food and you have spent the week reading menus on their behalf, this is the answer.
6. Kavarna Tiskarna: charcoal oven, no crowds
In Bežigrad, in the old Mladinska knjiga printing works, Kavarna Tiskarna cooks its burgers in a KOPA charcoal oven and opens at 7:00 on weekdays. That makes it the best long, unhurried lunch on this list, away from the tourist centre. Monday to Wednesday 7:00 to 22:00, Thursday and Friday until 23:00, Saturday 9:00 to 23:00, Sunday 9:00 to 22:00.
7. The rest of a strong field
Rina Bistro on Eipprova in Trnovo is the burger-and-beer sports bar, with 40-plus beers, live sport and outdoor seating.
Super Pšanc on Trubarjeva does pressure-cooked chicken burgers, which is a different craving entirely.
Hot Horse in Tivoli Park is the one to try at least once: a kiosk, an institution, and a horse burger. Not for everyone. Definitely Ljubljana.
Burger Time on Trubarjeva is the practical pick, with vegan options using coconut-based cheese.
The short version
Best rated: Pop's Place. Best local story and best late hours: Hood Burger Center. Best score on smaller numbers: Zbornica. Best smash burger: Smash. Best gluten-free: Dežela Okusov. Most Ljubljana: Hot Horse.
Six of the ten are in the car-free centre, so you can do a burger crawl on foot without touching a taxi.
And if you would rather narrow it down your way, ask LetsVisit. Say something like "smash burger near the centre, open after ten, not too loud" and it answers with real places drawn from 43 destinations and 6,216 spots across Slovenia, on a map. No sponsored noise.
FAQ
Which burger in Ljubljana has the best rating?
Pop's Place has the highest Tripadvisor burger ranking with the largest review base, 4.5 from 2,642 reviews, and a Gault&Millau Slovenia 2026 listing. Zbornica scores 4.7 but on far fewer reviews.
Where can I get a gluten-free burger in Ljubljana?
Dežela Okusov on Eipprova ulica runs a fully gluten-free kitchen, which makes it the safest bet if cross-contamination matters.
What is a horse burger, and where do I get one?
It is exactly what it sounds like: horse meat, a Slovenian tradition. The kiosk in Tivoli Park is the place. It is a talking point, not a neutral recommendation.
Are these places open late?
Hood Burger Center serves until midnight daily. Most others close between 22:00 and 23:00, and Zbornica is closed on Sundays.
Do I need to book?
For Pop's Place in summer, yes. Most burger places in Ljubljana are walk-in, and queues move quickly.
